Can any one please help. Suddenly my paint brush and clone tool have
stopped working. When I select a colour and then select the tool I can not
apply it to the photo at all. It had previously been working OK. I have
version 12 and have even un-installed and reinstalled it and the problem is
still there.

Thanks Luke

I checked these settings 'normal' brush and '0' transparency, these were
correct but the paintbrush still won't work.

All I can think is that I must have picked up a virus that our antivirus
program can't detect.

I was hoping that the problem was caused by an incorrect setting.

I would like to here if there is something else I could try before I have to
go to the trouble of re-formatting my hard drive.

Hi David,

whoahh nelly!! HD reformat sounds a bit extreme! and I dont think a virus
would have done this so lets start from the beginning -

what is the mode of your image? what colour are you trying to paint? (values
please) Have you tried different colours?

the most likely scenario I can think of is that somehow your new documents
are paletted (or maybe mono) - based on a earlier job, and the colour you
are selecting is not part of that palette or is too light to show up on your
image.

try creating a new image, set the mode to CMYK, then set your paint colour
to 100%K and then try painting anywhere on the canvas. make sure your brush
is nice and thick and soft edge is set to zero. if that doesnt work, try
creating a mask and painting within the mask. let me know how you go..

usually with these things it is something blindingly simple. or something
really bad... but lets be positive!

cheers,
luke

Thanks awfully for your help. If I open any photo jpg file. Click on the
PhotoPaint default RGB or CMYK pallet as I have done many times before, to
set the foreground colour, doesn't matter what colour I choose, the paint
brush seems to be dead. The fill tool works OK.

Also, at the same time, there appeared two other problems. The Clone tool
won't clone (won't paint anything), this is my biggest problem as I use it
often. And I used to be able to have the colour pallet docked along the
right hand side of my screen and it would still be there after I re-launched
Draw or Photopaint. Now for some reason on re-launching it has disappeared
and has to be re-opened each time(in both applications). I have saved
settings in the options menu, but this doesn't help.
It seems these three problems must be linked in some way.

The Outline and Fill tools are still working OK in CorelDraw.

Hey David,

sounds like you do have a bigger problem, thought it may have been something
simple. Between the program working and not working did anything else happen
on your PC? Had PP crashed or anything?

The only thing I can think of doing is closing PP, search for CorelPP.ini
(should be in C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Application
Data\Corel\Graphics12\User Workspace\Corel PHOTO-PAINT12\), rename it to
CorelPP.old and restart PP. Please not that I cannot guarantee this will
work or that it won't harm your system - though it shouldn't, and if you are
already considering reinstalling XP, it may be an easy fix. Also it wont
affect Draw and doesn't explain the recurrence but it will be a useful
troubelshooting step.

BTW the palette that disappears - is that a custom palette or the standard
one(s)?

Cheers,
Luke

When you uninstalled did you check that all folders were gone? I
can't speak for v12 but many programs leave files behind which contain
personal settings and are not overwritten when you reinstall (so you
don't have to start from scratch). If your nibs file was corrupt it
may still be on reinstall.

Uninstall then completely remove the Corel folder in Program Files and
also the personal settings which are in the c:\documents and folders\
path

C:\Documents and Settings\"Your PC Logon"\Application
Data\Corel\Graphics12

You may want to back up the folder before doing this so you can
recover settings if you need to.

A quick check to see if it is a corrupt file is just to change your
workspace to one of the other settings. Default if you normally have
a custom workspace, or PP10.

All fixed now, thanks so much for all your help, Luke and Starman*.

Finally, the only thing that worked. I will run through what I did.
Un-installed Corel 12.
Restarted the computer.
Searched for all files and directories with the word 'corel' in. (there were
heaps still there in the places where you said (what a lot of large .ini
files) and also a lot of others in strange places)
I deleted some of these and shifted the rest to a temp file, just in case I
want to search for my custom templates etc later.
There were also bits left in the registry, so I repaired them with a reg
cleaner.
Restarted the computer again.
Re-installed Corel 12.

Hoo-ray, very excited now, as myself and my boss at work have spent many
hours, trying to fix the problem.
As you would expect, I have now lost all my settings. But, who cares, at
least everything is now working correctly and I didn't need to format the
hard drive. I guess I will never know what caused it to happen. I have
been using CorelDraw since the first version and have never had anything
this bad happen before.

All fixed now
Once you have everything back to normal, backup the Corel folders on
the Documents and Settings path as a "last good working set". I'm
fairly sure your brushes.ini or ppnib.nib files got corrupted. If the
problem recurrs you can simply copy the good versions back and still
have your custom settings. Ditto for corrupted workspaces.
